Maximum Payloads

Please note that these weights are an indication only as weight of actual equipment can vary. In case of excessive or incorrect loading, all additional costs will be charged. Containers must also be loaded in such a way that the maximum axle weight is not exceeded. Please contact your local Eucon office if you have a query on this.

Confirmation of VGM (Verified Gross Mass)

Prior to any container being loaded on board a seagoing vessel, the shipper must communicate a Verified Gross Mass to the carrier. The VGM (Verified gross Mass) is the total combined weight of all Cargo (Payload) inside a container, including packaging and stowage material and the ‘Tare’ weight of the container. The VGM can be determined by two methods. Which method can be used depends on local legislation and possible registration and is of no further relevance to the carrier.

Method 1: The complete container, after loading and sealing, is weighed by using a weighbridge.

Method 2: The individual weights of the various elements (cargo, packing, stowage and lashing material, tare weight of the container) are added to come to a calculated VGM. The tare weight of the container can be found at the door of the container.

Click on below link for further information and guidance on how to communicate VGM. If you want to advise the verified payload or VGM weight please login or register. For further reading please see the SOLAS VGM Industry FAQ from our news section.

CO2 Emissions

Eucon are members of the Smart Freight Centre.

  • The Smart Freight Centre adopted the Global Logistics Emissions Council Framework as the preferred way of measuring greenhouse gas emissions from shipping and logistics.
  • Within this Framework, Eucon has chosen to work with “Well to Wheel” calculations. This method provides the most complete and accurate way to measure energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Well to wheel analysis is a comprehensive method for assessing energy efficiency and emissions. It considers the total energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions throughout the entire life cycle of an energy source. The GLEC Framework remains as the gold standard for logistics emissions accounting.

If you have any other questions on CO2 Emissions calculations please contact your local Eucon representative.
